A new day...A new year dawns....

Posted by dashwood95 , 01 January 2015 · 1,553 views

2014 has been a year of many ups and downs. I accepted a permanent job a few days before the new year and thought 2014 would be bright. In many ways it was. Work is hard, and though I don't feel I've found home I do know I am making a difference. I work hard, and sometimes it actually shows. Heck, a few people have actually noticed!

On a personal note, May saw a big decision that we thought had come to fruition in October only to be cut down in heartbreak by the end of the month. We'll come back from it, but it is taking time.

Here's to hoping 2015 brings more joy and happiness, less stress, more money (I know..haha!) and closer ties with friends and family. efabes and I wish you all a very Happy 2015!

Pet Peeves...again!

Posted by dashwood95 , 14 March 2014 · 2,236 views

Hey it's been a while so I can discuss pet peeves again.....

Why do people join a few, a dozen, a few dozen sites all asking the same question but not going back to see what answer they've been given?

In the case of spammers of the traditional sense that's an obvious question. They usually sign up and hide links in the post that go to nefarious sites or have other intention to cause destruction. I'm not talking about those types of "spammers" in this post. I'm talking about the ones that really do have a problem, but they are so damned impatient they sign up at many sites to ask the same question.

This is extremely rude and also frustrating because we spend a lot of time trying to offer advice or suggestions only to never hear back on the outcome. These posts are kept so they might be indexed and therefore searchable later for people that are having a same or similar issue. I hate when I find an old topic somewhere that never got resolved one way or the other because the OP never bothered to report back.

Rules to live by people....

1) If you post a question, always...ALWAYS go back and post when it's resolved, even if you resolved it on your own or via other methods.

2) When possible, post what you did to resolve it.

3) Be patient. We aren't here 24/7 just waiting for your question to pop up. Give us 24 hours. Usually we don't even need that long.

4) Manners go a long way. We don't ask for much, but a simple thank you or kind word really means something.

5) Don't be just a taker. Stick around and maybe answer someone else's question....Even if it's just to bump their post because you think we missed it.

Feel free to offer your thoughts and your additions to the rules to live by. :)

Cloning/Imaging...Worth the effort?

So I tried out a software my fellow techies recommended, but it didn't seem to work as I thought/hoped it would nor did it actually achieve the result I wanted. I ended up saying forget it and skipping the idea of cloning or imaging the HD.

I see now that I'll need to research more before I try again, but that's okay. This little venture cost me nothing but my time.

Laptop is running fast as ever. I shut down all unnecessary processes, removed all the bloated junk the installation discs put on and setup the system on her network last night. All's well that ends well.

Onto the next adventure in computing.

Adventures in tech support.....

So last week it was a catastrophic HD failure, and this weekend it's a complete rebuild of my old laptop for my sister.

I haven't done this much IT support in months!

I had forgotten just how LONG my old laptop takes to reinstall the OS with all the bloated garbage Compaq puts with it. Partway through I forgot that I wasn't supposed to change any Windows settings and turned off the sidebar. Low and behold, a few reboots later the installation failed causing me to start all over again last night. Stayed up til midnight and got it all set to install the antivirus before going to bed.

Been up since 630a working on it, and it's still no where near done with Windows Updates let alone ready to be cloned!

Yes I finally decided to try and do a clone before I send this computer off to get jacked up again. I'm hoping if she encounters issues down the road I can just use that instead of going through all this again. I'm giving a program called PC Disc Clone X a try. Hopefully it's good because I did not spend much time researching.

Spooky! Happy Friday the 13th!

Posted by dashwood95 , 13 September 2013 · 1,263 views

I find it amusing that people are superstitious about today. Even as a kid I loved being different and embracing Friday the 13th. It was like being in on a joke or something.

If you read up on it, it's only unlucky in Western culture and started around the 19th century. People need to get a life!

The wikipedia entry on it is amusing. It contains a list of "notable" people that died on Friday the 13th (notable to some I guess). I did recognize a few of them like Mickey Spillane, Julia Child and Tupac, but somehow I don't think it was the day that was the problem for those people.

I prefer the movies by the same name. Not entirely scary but still campy goodness (pun intended). :)
