I have a new dvd device in a Dell laptop.

Selecting cd/dvd as boot device on a latitude e6410 proves useless

the device does not boot to the XP re-install disc which is what I am attempting.

XP does not find the device either. Is there anything I can do?

Is the dvd player at fault?

Laptop DVD players are rather frail devices.  I've seen many of them fail.  If you can borrow or purchase a USB drive, you can set it to boot from in the BIOS.  Once you're satisfied that the internal drive is kaput, replacement may not be too difficult, depending on the make.

If you aren't sure about installing a new drive yourself, you can consider an external DVD drive; if possible, try to get one with a separate power plug supply, not just running off the USB cable alone. Better performance. Link:

First, are you saying while booted into XP, the drive isn't found?  Or is the only problem booting from the device?? Also you say it's a new DVD drive?

If so, has it ever worked?  Also, is it the same issue as old drive had?  These are important clues as to what is going on.  The cable could be bad/unplugged at either end, etc, depending on your answers to the above questions.

rob, ta.

this makes sense as the laptop fell once.

I'll send back the dvd drive I have here and get a usb portable.
